Rules
The Comprehensive Rules are the official definition of the game of Magic. For sanctioned tournament play, they are supplemented by the Tournament Rules, and administered by judges and tournament organizers.
The Comprehensive Rules update often, usually in small ways, with the release of most new sets. Along with these changes, there may be targeted amendments to the Oracle text of specific cards.
The Rules are a verbose, legalese document, standing at 292 pages as of May 20, 2024. Most players do not need to reference them regularly or memorize them. A small reference card is included with Commander series decks to introduce new players, and covers the majority of gameplay interactions. The Comprehensive Rules are intended to be consulted when specific rules questions arise.
The Rules are available from Wizards of the Coast in TXT, PDF, and DOCX formats.
