Ramirez DePietro was a flamboyant pirate from Dominaria, who pillaged the seas surrounding Jamuraa around 3000 AR and later continued to do so as a ghost.

History[ | ]

When he was alive, he looked like he was 15, but sounded ancient to the people that met him. He once boasted of having drunk from a Fountain of Youth.[1] He had a past with Adira Strongheart which was left purposely vague. Ramirez and the archer Tor Wauki fought against Adira's Robaran Mercenaries before being pitifully defeated.

Ramirez DePietro's likeness also appeared nearly a thousand years later when his form was assumed by the shapeshifter Halfdane.[2][3] Halfdane claimed to have killed the original DePietro who must have been a thousand years old at the time. The appearance that Halfdane had assumed certainly looked older.

Ghost[ | ]

Ramirez's spectral form has been a feature of the seas off Jamuraa for centuries now, signing on with a new pirate crew whenever he feels the call of the waves. Ramirez's sense of style and ready wit make him popular among pirates who aren't prejudiced against dead people.

When he's in a talkative mood (which is always), DePietro has claimed to have served on Captain Crucias's Backstab as a privateer in the South Sea during the Brothers' War, to have fought alongside Tor Wauki the Elder against the Robaran Mercenaries in the Sea of Serenity during Johan's War, and to have raided shipping between the Edemi Isles during the Madaran reconquest. He claims variously to have died in a battle with the pirate queen Adira Strongheart, to have been assassinated by the Tolarian shapeshifter known only as Halfdane, and to have been outmatched by Gwendlyn Di Corci in Urborg. How many of these tales, if any, are true, is impossible to know.[4]

Trivia[ | ]

  • The appearance of Ramirez in both Legends Cycle I and Legends Cycle II was considered one of the largest continuity error of Magic storyline.[5] The appearance of spirit version of the character in Commander Legends gave a possible explanation.
  • Ramirez is a Spanish family name, Di Pietro (that Americans would write "De Pietro", as Di Niro became De Niro in the States) is a South-Italian family name, but South Italy was ruled by Spain until 1860. Therefore, the name of this character is definitely Spanish (to be precise: South Italy—the Kingdom of Naples—was part of the Kingdom of Spain—the Crown of Aragon—until 1714, then it became an independent kingdom until 1860, but still with kings and nobility mostly from Spain).
  • Ramirez DePietro has two family names, but no first name, as it is often usual in the United States (e.g. think of MacKenzie Hamilton or Kendall Jenner).
