Sanwell, the Avenger Ace, was a human pilot from Dominaria during the time of the Brothers' War.
Description[ | ]
Sanwell was a Sword Avenger pilot from Penregon in Urza's army during the Brothers' War. He was a young, dark-skinned[note 1][1] man with long, dark, braided hair. He wore gold and gray armor with large shoulder pauldrons and a large artificer's belt. He was the older brother of Rendall. [2]
History[ | ]
Sanwell and his brother Rendall came to Kroog from Penregon as children and integrated into Yotian culture. Sanwell became an Avenger cadet, training to pilot large humanoid war machines. On the day of the Fall of Kroog, Sanwell and his fellow trainees were hastily promoted to full pilots to defend the city against Mishra's forces, including the fearsome dragon engine Traxos. Despite his initial anxiety, Sanwell showed bravery, especially worrying for his younger brother, Rendall, a cadet stationed at the palace.[2]
Under the command of Llora and with the guidance of Tawnos, Urza's chief apprentice, Sanwell piloted the advanced avenger "Sword One." The attack was devastating, with the dragon engines causing widespread destruction. Amidst chaos and tragedy, Sanwell and the other pilots fought valiantly but were overwhelmed. Llora and many others perished, and Sanwell experienced the horror of war as he witnessed the fall of Kroog, a city once known for its joy and vibrant festivals. Retreating from the city with fellow pilot Rica, Sanwell confronted the brutal reality of war and the destructive power of the Avengers.[3][2]
By 31 AR, Sanwell, Rendall, and Richlau attended the newly opened school in Penregon. By 36 AR, the two brothers were counted as senior students.[3]
It was Sanwell, by then appointed Junior Artificer, who in 57 AR brought the news to Urza that Mishra was planning to come to Argoth physically. This information had been deliberately planted in a Gixian agent by Gix to make Urza and Mishra face each other physically.[3]
