Shadress was a human from New Capenna, part of Yuma's and Elnor's gang, and Elnor's girlfriend.

Description[ | ]

Shadress was a talented tailor in New Capenna, known for her calm demeanor and cryptic way of speaking. She had a unique ability to convey deep, indirect messages, often comparing life to an arch, emphasizing the strength found in mutual support. Her skills as a tailor were exceptional.[1]

History[ | ]

Sahadress played a crucial role in a group of friends who shared a vision of creating a better life away from the Riveteers, the labor gang they had all been a part of. Shadress’s idea to purchase a building for their collective dream, however, marked the beginning of their downfall. The debt they incurred led them into a spiral of crime, making them many enemies.[1]

Shadress acted as an informal leader of the group, often motivating in the form of similes and a level of morality for the group to follow. While initially successful, the group soon came up against the corrupt nature of life on Cappena and was forced to turn to crime to survive. A series of setbacks with the group's living situation led Shadress to suggest they buy a building but the loan required increasing their rate of theft. A failed robbery on a Brokers-controlled train left the group poor and splintering. Shadress was deeply respected within the group, and she was seen as the moral compass among them, though she became more withdrawn after a failed train heist. She was suffering from depression at the loss of the group's ideals and faded away.[1]

In the end, Shadress's belief in unity and strength through mutual support could not save the group from the pressures of their world. Her legacy, though tied to their ultimate failure, was one of integrity and quiet strength. Shadress's death is not explicitly detailed, but it's implied that she died sometime after the train heist that marked the beginning of the end for the group she was a part of. Yuma reflected on how Elnor started to fight in a calm, careful, and thoughtful manner, similar to how Shadress used to behave, which leads the narrator to conclude that Shadress must be dead. The reason is that such a drastic change in Elnor's fighting style would likely only occur as a way of honoring Shadress's memory.[1]
