Sobeslav was the assistant to Guildmaster Jarad vod Savo of the Golgari Swarm on the plane of Ravnica.

Sobeslav was tasked with responding to an unusual invitation from Mazirek, the death priest and leader of the kraul, an insectoid race recently allied with the Golgari. Skeptical of the kraul's significance, Sobeslav led a contingent of guards on a perilous journey deep into the Undercity, guided by a spell linked to a mushroom attached to the letter.
Their trek led them through increasingly treacherous terrain, culminating in a vast, dimly lit cavern where they encountered hundreds of kraul clinging to the ceiling. Mazirek confronted Sobeslav, who quickly realized the death priest had been poisoning him and his guards from the moment they entered the cavern. One by one, the guards collapsed, and Sobeslav succumbed last, dying in agony as Mazirek drained his life force to empower his necromantic spell.
With the amassed power, Mazirek opened a massive stone slab, revealing Umerilek, the Mausoleum of the Erstwhile, filled with ancient, undead nobles. As the mausoleum's inhabitants began to rise, Mazirek stood triumphant, poised to use this newfound army to secure the kraul's place and reshape the Golgari Swarm into an empire.
