Soot counters are a type of counter introduced in Urza's Saga. They force players to sacrifice permanents.
Description[]
Soot counters first appeared on Smokestack in Urza's Saga. It is an artifact that gets one of the Soot counters each upkeep. Then each player must sacrifice a permanent on their upkeep for every Soot counter on it. This represents the Smokestack producing pollution that destroys permanents.
Trivia[]
- In Magic Online, the counter is colored green as it's considered a positive effect and shares its icon with Collection, Descent, Fetch, Invitation, Oil, Mire and Slime counters.[1]
