Spawn is a blue and colorless creature type used for cards and tokens that depict any creature that is regarded as the offspring of some stock, idea, place, etc.

The first card to bear the type was Elder Spawn in Legends, but the subtype was changed to Elemental in the Grand Creature Type Update. Spawning Pit from Darksteel still kept producing spawn tokens.

It was later reinvented to depict a creature class of Eldrazi tokens created by several cards from Rise of the Eldrazi. Each of the three Eldrazi Titans (Ulamog, Emrakul and Kozilek) spawns its own "brood lineage." The three brood lineages are composed of Eldrazi Drones and subordinate spawns, each reflecting the image of its progenitor.[1]

Elder Spawn wasn't changed back to its original type until the September 2011 Rules Update of Innistrad.
