Spindlewight was the first beastie on Duskmourn who befriended Survivors in the House.
Description[ | ]
Spindlewight was a formidable and awe-inspiring Beastie within the House, characterized by his imposing physical presence, which included six legs, three arms, sharp claws, horns like spears, and teeth like knives.[1] His body was covered in a thick, blue and green pelt, marked with rosette-like patterns reminiscent of moth wings. He wore a mask fashioned from broken bones and stolen scrap. Spindlewight exuded both strength and curiosity, driven by a desire to understand the House and its many mysteries. He was a natural leader among his kind, a powerful protector, and ultimately, a pioneer in discovering the purpose of his people.
History[ | ]
When beasties first emerged in the house, they traveled in a single pack.[1] Spindlewight, their leader, embarked on a journey through the House, seeking to uncover the purpose of his kind. Descending into its deepest, most dangerous depths, he faced and fought countless horrors. In a ruined library, he discovered three survivors — a parent and two children — and defended them from a cellarspawn.[2] Despite his efforts, the parent was mortally wounded, and with their dying wish, they entrusted Spindlewight to care for their children. This encounter revealed his people's purpose: to protect and cherish the survivors, which came to be referred to as "keep-alives." Spindlewight brought this knowledge back to his kind, shaping their new mission. During a foray in the House, one of his keep-alives fled in fear when Spindlewight's mask fell, beginning a tradition of never removing them in front of their charges; Spindlewight himself was shattered by the ostensible rejection and removed himself from beastie leadership. His bond with his other keep-alive never broke across many adventures until tragedy struck with his eventual death, with only Spindlewight's mask returned by the survivor. Spindlewight's actions paved the way for his people to find meaning in their existence within the House.
Trivia[ | ]
- Mira Grant's commentary on the story of Duskmourn: House of Horror notes that the story for which Spindlewight was created was written after the set was sent to print, which is why he did not appear on a card in that set.[3]
