Spuzzem |
Spuzzem is an obsolete and test card creature type for a race of plant-like elementals on Dominaria.
History[ | ]
Spuzzem was originally introduced as a creature type in Legends on Floral Spuzzem. Not much is known about them other than their appearance being plant-like creatures with two hoofed feet, an oval-like body, and an appendage of vines coming out of their lower body that can stretch and grab onto objects. It is unknown whether this is the normal appearance of all Spuzzems or just the floral variety. In the Grand Creature Type Update the creature type was incorporated in the Elemental type implying they are more elemental rather than just plant creatures.
The original card became a meme due to its strange wording "...then Floral Spuzzem may choose to destroy a target artifact under that opponent's control and deal no damage." This implies it was sentient and the card itself would choose rather than the player. This text was later given errata to clarify that the player was to choose instead.[1]
The type reappeared on Spuzzem Strategist, a test card in the Mystery Booster 2 set, referring back to Floral Spuzzem's original text and allowing the player to "...make all choices for Spuzzems you control." It appeared as a humanoid face surrounded by vines that took the shape of hands.

Trivia[ | ]
- R&D's Secret Lair allows Floral Spuzzem to make its own decisions again as it undoes errata.
- According to Mark Rosewater, if you stare at Floral Spuzzem long enough you start to hear voices.[1] It communicates telepathically and you have to listen very carefully for its choice of artifact to destroy.[2][3][4]
- Floral Spuzzem can be warned for slow play if it takes too long to make its choice.[5] If it gets disqualified for repeated slow play infractions, the player hopefully has more than 60 cards.[6] As its controller, the player also gets the slow play warning.[7]
- The controller of Floral Spuzzem may also interpret the best he or she can the Floral Spuzzems intentions as Floral Spuzzems can’t talk.[8][9][10][11][12] Mark Rosewater's recommended way to divine its will is to put your ear right next to the Floral Spuzzem and then act as if you're interpreting what you hear. Then always tell the Floral Spuzzem “Good choice.”[13]
- The Legends team didn't understand Floral Spuzzem as it doesn’t tend to speak up for itself enough.[14]
- Design stopped making cards like Floral Spuzzem that traded combat damage for other effects and instead changed it to things that trigger off of creatures damaging another player because it created less tension and was playing how many players played it. It also made it clearer when it happened and at what time.[15]
