The Pantheon is a professional Magic team. First assembled in preparation for Pro Tour Dark Ascension in 2012, it became known by the name SCG Black in time for Pro Tour Avacyn Restored. It was sponsored by StarCityGames, and the team roster at that point was Sam Black, Kai Budde, Andrew Cuneo, Reid Duke, Jon Finkel, Tom Martell, Gabriel Nassif, Paul Rietzl, Gaudenis Vidugiris, Alexander West, and Jelger Wiegersma.[1] On January 19, 2014, it was announced that the team had changed its sponsor to ChannelFireball, and subsequently changed its name to "The Pantheon" following a fan vote.
The team consists in large part of former full-time professional players, including many Hall of Famers. The team lineup has changed from event to event, but fixtures include Jon Finkel (the unofficial leader of the team), Reid Duke, Owen Turtenwald, William Jensen, Andrew Cuneo, Kai Budde, Jelger Wiegersma, and Gabriel Nassif.[2] Other players who have been a part of the team include Rich Hoaen, Matt Costa, Shahar Shenhar, Ben Rubin, Antonino De Rosa, Zvi Mowshowitz, Jacob Wilson, and Brad Nelson.
The team has experienced considerable success since its inception, often cited as one of the most successful team in recent years.[2] Results include wins for Tom Martell at Pro Tour Gatecrash and Patrick Chapin at Pro Tour Journey into Nyx, five Pro Tour top eights for Owen Turtenwald, four for Jon Finkel, three for Reid Duke, and two for Jelger Wiegersma.
In 2017, The Pantheon's sponsor changed from ChannelFireball to D3 Go!, and started hosting streams on its own Twitch channel, where members of the team, including Gabriel Nassif and Jon Finkel, as well as Chris Pikula, streamed Magic Online. During the Magic Pro Tour Team Series, The Pantheon formed two teams, named after their sponsor and its major Magic product:
- Team PuzzleQuest: Reid Duke, Owen Turtenwald, William Jensen, Jon Finkel, Paul Rietzl, Andrew Cuneo
- Team D3 Go!: Ben Rubin, Matt Costa, Shahar Shenhar, Jelger Wiegersma, Brock Parker, Tom Martell
For the 2017–18 season, The Pantheon's sponsor changed again, this time to Ultimate Guard, fielding a reprise of the 2017 Team Series' team Puzzle Quest. The team went on to win the Team Series title, defeating Hareruya Latin in the final held at the 2018 World Championship.
