The War for Shandalar was an event on Shandalar.
History[ | ]
After the Summit of the Null Moon, planeswalker Faralyn escaped from the Shard of the Twelve Worlds to Shandalar, a plane rich in mana, where he claimed dominion. He spent his first time mocking Tevesh Szat, Leshrac, and Lim-Dûl rather than learning the plane's unusual rules for drawing magic. Faralyn's arrogance led to his death when an Astral dragon summoned by Kenan Sahrmal overwhelmed him with mana, causing him to explode.
After bringing Lim-Dûl to the plane and entombing him in stone for his failure to bring his undead army to the plane, Leshrac witnessed Faralyn's death and, realizing wizards were less significant on Shandalar than on other worlds, vowed to conquer the plane.[1]
In the Shadowwood, Bani Bakur and her sister Ravash Mog saved dark elves from zombies. Despite Ravash's doubts about Kenan Sahrmal's absence, Bani's faith remained strong. The sisters returned to Ardestan, where Bani sensed corrupted mana, possibly linked to Lim-Dûl.[1]
Twelve weeks later, Leshrac met Tevesh Szat and the entombed Lim-Dûl in the desert. Now aware that Shandalar's mana disrupted their powers, Leshrac taunted Lim-Dûl and seemingly incinerated him. However, Lim-Dûl, having spent months meditating in the stone and learning the rules for drawing mana, reemerged in the Catacombs of Shandalar with new powers. Disguised as Magus, he deceived Bani and Ravash into thinking he was Sahrmal and enlisted their help against invading planeswalkers.
Elsewhere, Szat, haunted by memories of Sarpadia, decided Shandalar must be frozen like Dominaria. Leshrac summoned an image of Sahrmal, curious why the protector had yet to intervene.[1]
In the Catacombs, Lim-Dûl used a Jester's Cap to manipulate Bani and Ravash, summoning bats to exploit Bani's fear and causing Ravash’s death by preying on her insecurity. Bani, consumed by guilt, swore to kill Szat, unaware that the real Sahrmal watched, questioning his role. Bani vowed to destroy the invading planeswalkers, especially Szat. Szat, weakened by Lim-Dûl's Manabarbs, was ambushed by Bani’s soldiers but they were annihilated. Kenan Sahrmal finally revealed himself but was quickly stunned by Szat’s Infernal Darkness. Just as Szat was about to finish him, Leshrac returned, warning of Lim-Dûl’s continued survival. Szat, furious, attacked Leshrac, leading to both planeswalkers retreating from the plane, frustrated by Shandalar’s bizarre mana.[1]
With Sahrmal weakened, the sole remaining invader, Lim-Dûl, used a Mirror Universe spell to swap bodies with Sahrmal as Bani struck, allowing her to decapitate Sahrmal's body while Lim-Dûl, in Sahrmal's form, disappeared. Although Sahrmal survived this attack, the effort greatly diminished his powers for a time.[1]
After her sister’s funeral, Bani rejected Lim-Dûl’s attempt to impersonate Sahrmal, realizing Ravash was right about planeswalkers. Lim-Dûl spent the next twelve years building an undead army before launching Lim-Dûl's War.[1]
