Yotia was the most southern of the coastal kingdoms and the chief military might of eastern Terisiare at the time of the Brothers' War on Dominaria.[1]
Description[ | ]
Before the Brothers' War, Yotia was an open territory of fertile fields, but by 55 AR, the fields had become completely barren, stripped of their resources for the war.[1]
The Capital city of Yotia was Kroog. After the Fall of Kroog, Yotia was ruled by its queen-in-exile Kayla bin-Kroog, from the Argive capital of Penregon.
Other Yotian cities include Jorilin, the hometown of Tawnos, situated on the coast, and Hench, a caravan town east of Kroog, used as a refugee point during the Fall of Kroog. [2]
The Sword Marches was a conquered territory in the west of Yotia, originally called the Suwwardi Marches by the Fallaji nomads. The Warlord of Kroog and his forces traveled to Korlinda to meet the Fallaji Qadir and his armies for the Peace Summit at Korlinda, which failed spectacularly because both claimed countries claimed the Sword Marches as its own. This region was the first to fall to the Fallaji, and even after the Liberation of Yotia, the Sword Marches remained under tentative Fallaji control. The fighting there continued through the war, and was so heavy that by 55 AR, the Sword Marches were a field of blackened glass, completely unlivable.[1]
Yotia was a very religious nation, honoring a set of gods that were mostly forgotten in later eras - with two notable exceptions. They were:
History[ | ]
Yotia suffered the brunt of Fallaji raiding parties even before the outbreak of the war. Yotia was a polytheistic society worshipping many gods, including Bok, Mabok, and Gaea. The Yotians believed that a human soul was too myriad to be judged by a single god, but that instead one had seven souls throughout their life, and each of them was afforded its judgment by one of the seven brass gods.[2][3] Souls judged poorly would be sent to seven hells. It was a monarchy, whose leader traditionally took the title of Warlord (or Warlady). It was the homeland of Tawnos, apprentice to Urza, and Kayla bin-Kroog, daughter of the Warlord of Kroog and wife of Urza, and the capital city of the nation was Kroog. During Kayla's father's reign, at least two Suwwardi campaigns were launched by Yotia.[4]
After the death of the Warlord at Korlinda, Kayla became the Queen of Kroog, refused the traditional title of "Warlady". She witnessed the Fall of Kroog, Yotia's capital, by Mishra's dragon engines. The kingdom's army regrouped in the nearby caravan town of Hench.[2] Yotia would remain under Fallaji occupation for ten years, before being liberated by Argive and Korlis. By this time, Yotia had been scarred almost beyond repair by the Fallaji plundering and Mishra's Scorched Earth policy. The Yotians would continue to fight on Urza's side until the end of the war. After the war, the city of New Yotia rose along the banks of the Mardun, west of Penregon. A busy river port for the region's trappers, miners, and farmers, it carried on the traditions of old Yotia. Most of the refugees of Penregon settled in New Yotia, fleeing the encroaching ice.[5] The kingdom was later absorbed into Argive, and eventually crumbled with the rest of the world.
Trivia[ | ]
- Yotia's name comes from the Antiquities card Yotian Soldier. As the card was conceived as a toy soldier, its name is the word "toy" backward, with "ian" appended to the end.[6]
